Pedrosa takes pole in French MotoGP

Spain's Dani Pedrosa grabbed pole position for the French Grand Prix for the second successive season here on Saturday.
LE MANS, France (AFP) -
Spain's Dani Pedrosa grabbed pole position for the French Grand Prix for the second successive season here on Saturday.
The Honda rider timed 1min 33.974sec to edge out compatriot Jorge Lorenzo, on a Yamaha, and Australian Casey Stoner was third fastest on a Ducati.
"My aim was to be on the front row. Pole position is great, but the race will depend on the weather," said Pedrosa after grabbing his first pole of the season on a day where conditions switched from heavy rain to a dry surface.
Lorenzo just missed out on what would have been a second successive pole position.
"I was a tiny bit unlucky on my last lap," said the Spaniard.
"But the important thing is that were on the first row and now we can try to get the good start that we need. We came second but we were very close to the first position, only five thousandths of a second down and I feel good on the bike."
Former world champion Stoner is hoping rain won't be a factor on Sunday.
"It looks like 50/50, it could be wet, could be dry. It would be nice to think we could have another dry race, as there is less pressure and it is more fun," said Stoner.
"We look close in terms of lap times but I think there are only five of us who are close enough to win the race. If it is dry I expect a battle at front."
Championship leader Valentino Rossi, seeking a 99th career win, was fourth fastest on a Yamaha while fellow Italian Marco Melandri will start on the third line of the grid despite suffering a spectacular fall in qualifying.
He was more fortunate than Spanish veteran Sete Gibernau who will not race at all after fracturing his left collarbone during the second session on Saturday morning.
"It is a real shame and it is very bad luck because Sete was already coming back from a shoulder injury and had been improving steadily," said team manager Pablo Nieto.
"Obviously what we do next will all hinge on how much time he needs to recover which could be longer than for a young rider. It is really tough for the whole team to accept, including for Sete himself of course, because we are all giving so much effort to this project."

LE MANS, France (AFP) -
Spanish rider Jorge Lorenzo won the French MotoGP here on Sunday just a year after he finished second despite riding with two broken ankles.
The 22-year-old - a two-time 250cc world champion - enjoyed a trouble free ride on his Yamaha to coast home ahead of Italian Marco Melandri on a Kawasaki while pole sitter Dani Pedrosa of Spain was third on a Honda.
Lorenzo's joy was the reverse of Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi who had a nightmare as he sought his 99th career victory but in the end trailed in in 16th position without scoring a point.
That allowed Lorenzo to take over at the top of the standings where he leads Rossi by a point as well as Australia's Casey Stoner.
"It was a crazy race," gasped Lorenzo.
"The pivotal point came when we decided to change the tyres. After that I was riding confidently and it was easy from then on."
For Melandri it was a surprising but welcome change of fortune after a dire season last year for the former 250cc world champion.
"It's been a very tough time," said the 26-year-old.
"I just came here to do my best and I knew the weather would be a factor in the race.
"It is a very, very nice day for me."
Pedrosa was relieved to have grabbed third spot.
"I am very happy to be on the podium because I stopped to change the tyres too early.
"However, I was scared on the dry tyres after racing the first lap."
Lorenzo took the lead off his compatriot Pedrosa after the first lap passing both him and Australia's former world champion Casey Stoner in an audacious manoeuvre.
Stoner was suffering the most of the contenders as he then was passed by Rossi with 26 of the 28 laps remaining and the Italian great - known affectionately as the 'Doctor' - then overtook Pedrosa.
Lorenzo - who enjoys a difficult relationship with Rossi - held a lead of just over two seconds on the Italian.
However, disaster struck for Rossi with 23 laps remaining as having just come into the pits to change bikes and go on to dry tyres he came to grief on a corner and with his bike damaged he guided it back to the pits to get on a new one.
His day went from bad to worse as he was then penalised with a ride through penalty for speeding in the pit lane in his evident haste to try and rejoin the fray.
While he was enduring his nightmare Lorenzo looked serene out in front ahead of Andrea Dovizioso - who he led by over 11 seconds with 17 laps remaining - and he could afford to come into the pits with 16 laps to go.
Dovizioso's stay in second was shortlived and it was Melandri that became the biggest threat to Lorenzo as he trailed him by four seconds with 12 laps remaining.
Lorenzo never was in trouble after that and the main excitement came at the final lap when Pedrosa passed Honda team-mate Dovizioso to take the final podium spot.
Earlier reigning 250cc world champion Italian rider Marco Simoncelli won the 250cc Grand Prix. The Gilera rider beat home Hector Faubel of Spain while another Italian Roberto Locatelli was third.
Julian Simon of Spain on an Aprilia won the 125cc race ahead of Germany's Jonas Folger and Sergio Gadea of Spain.

Fiat Yamaha heads to happy hunting grounds

Twin Ring Motegi
Twin Ring Motegi

Fiat Yamaha riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo head to Japan this weekend for the second Grand Prix of 2009 at Motegi. In the past the race has always come close to the end of the season and last year it was the scene of victorious celebrations for the squad as Rossi wrapped up the World Championship with a stunning race win and Lorenzo finished fourth, helping to secure the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles to give Yamaha the coveted Triple Crown.

With just one race run so far this season there will be no repeat of last year’s championship-winning party, but the Italian and the Spaniard will be keen to keep the momentum high after finishing second and third under the Qatar floodlights. The pair were happy to open their season account with a podium apiece but will be hoping for an even better result in Yamaha’s home country. Both riders will make a stop in Tokyo on the way, where they will be helping Yamaha to launch a new R1.

Prior to last year’s winning bonanza, Rossi had taken just a single victory at the Twin Ring Motegi, back in 2001 before the advent of four-stroke MotoGP machinery. Lorenzo has scored only one podium before at the track with a third in 2006 on the way to the first of his two 250cc titles. MotoGP tyre suppler Bridgestone has traditionally been very strong at the circuit and with all the riders now on the Japanese rubber, hopes are high for an entertaining race.

Designed in 1997 as a test venue, Motegi features a somewhat geometric track layout. The surface offers good levels of grip without being overly abrasive but the proliferation of second gear turns, linked for the most part by mini-drag strips, means braking and acceleration are the main prerequisite to a fast lap time.

Valentino Rossi - “Incredible memories”
“My memories of last year at Motegi are incredible, because it was such a special victory after two year’s without the championship. This year of course will be very different, it’s only the second race and it will be quite strange going there so early in the championship. In Qatar we had one or two small areas that could have been better, so we will be trying hard to improve our setting during the practice time so that we’re able to run at the front on Sunday. I expect that Stoner will be strong again, so we just need to reduce the gap to him so that we can put up more of a fight. In the past Motegi hasn’t been a great track for me and I’ve had some bad races there, but I think last year cancelled that all out so I hope it can be successful for us once again this year.”

Jorge Lorenzo - “Hoping to close the gap”
“This is my second year with Yamaha in MotoGP and the second time going to our home! I feel very motivated about racing in Japan. Qatar was a huge beginning for us although I couldn’t keep the same pace as Valentino and Casey. I will try to be much closer to them in Motegi; that is the main aim for this race. Last year I took my last pole position of 2008, but in the race I was fourth after a nice battle with Pedrosa, fighting until the last lap. I hope that this year I will be fighting right at the front.”

Davide Brivio - “The target is to remain consistent”
“This year Motegi comes at the start of the season, so it will be a very different race to last year, when we had the chance to achieve all of our season goals there. Of course we did that and we have wonderful memories in our team of that race. This year we go there with different targets and the first one will be to improve our setting in order to allow us to remain consistent for the whole race, which wasn’t possible in Qatar. We will work hard in practice and hopefully we can give Valentino the tools to fight on Sunday.”

Daniele Romagnoli - “Building on a good start”
“We were very happy with the result from the first race, because to start the season with a podium shows that we are strong and have a good package, now we need to build on this. The gap to the leaders showed that we have some work to do to further improve Jorge’s setting, so this will be our target in Motegi. Hopefully we can make some more steps forward and be at the front in the race. Japan is a very important race for Yamaha and we’re looking forward to putting on a good show.”

Superb win for stoner in qatar monday night race

The re-scheduled first MotoGP race of 2009 saw Casey Stoner take victory at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar.

As the action in the premier class of the 2009 FIM MotoGP World Championship finally got underway, at the spectacular Losail International Circuit on Monday night, it was Casey Stoner who took the headlines, completing a hat-trick of season-opening wins in Qatar.

Following the exceptional postponement of the opening MotoGP contest of the year due to rain in the Arabian desert, Monday evening witnessed the first race in the new single tyre supplier era, but it was a familiar story with Stoner crossing the line first, ahead of World Champion Valentino Rossi.

A ruthless Stoner took the holeshot from pole and had built up a two second gap at the end of the first lap. The 2007 World Champion’s victory never looked in serious doubt as he controlled the race from the front, having been the fastest rider in every session over the weekend. Stoner’s winning margin was more than seven seconds at the end of a brilliant performance, casting aside any doubts about his fitness after winter surgery on his left wrist.

Completing the podium behind the front two was Rossi’s Fiat Yamaha colleague Jorge Lorenzo repeating his rostrum result from his MotoGP debut in the opening race of 2008, in his first race on Bridgestone tyres.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Colin Edwards started his seventh season in MotoGP riding solidly from sixth on the grid to finish fourth on his own Bridgestone debut, making it three Yamahas in the top four.

Also on new tyres and with a new factory bike Repsol Honda’s 2009 signing Andrea Dovizioso was fifth, fading slightly in the second half of the race having run in third place for several laps.

There was a good performance from Alex de Angelis, crossing the line sixth having qualified ninth at the start of his second year with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team. Rizla Suzuki’s Chris Vermeulen also made a decent start to the year with his improved GSV-R machine in seventh.

An excellent MotoGP debut from satellite Ducati rider Mika Kallio, meanwhile, saw him end up as the best placed rookie in eighth for the new look Pramac Racing outfit.

On factory machinery and returning to the Honda Gresini team this year, Toni ElĂas may be disappointed not to have done better than ninth, whilst Frenchman Randy de Puniet brought the satellite LCR Honda RC212V home three seconds behind the Spaniard to complete the top ten.

Dani Pedrosa, riding with knee and wrist injuries, battled through the pain barrier to pick up some important points in eleventh spot. On his Ducati debut, Pedrosa’s former team-mate Nicky Hayden also did well to complete the race in twelfth, given the back and chest injuries he suffered in a huge highside crash in qualifying on Saturday. The brave 2006 World Champion even set his best time on the last lap.

Sete Gibernau finished 13th on his MotoGP comeback with the satellite Ducati Grupo Francisco Hernando team, unable to push into the top ten due to his ongoing shoulder injury.

Marco Melandri made his first appearance for the Hayate Racing Team and ran off track early on but battled back well to finish in the points in 14th.

Commencing his 20th Grand Prix season Rizla Suzuki’s Loris Capirossi crashed out on lap eight and was unable to rejoin the race.

After a weekend off the MotoGP riders next reconvene at the Polini Grand Prix of Japan for round two, which takes place at the Motegi circuit from 24th-26th April.

Do your predictions for Qatar match those of the MotoGP Legend?

The start of the MotoGP season in Qatar also sees the launch of a new edition of the MotoGP Fantasy League, where you can find out once and for all just how much you know about premier class racing.

There is still time to make your picks for the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar, and this weekend you can also match your hunch against that of MotoGP Legend Angel Nieto, who spoke to motogp.com on Sunday afternoon.

“Stoner is very strong, but Rossi is very close and Lorenzo could get there,” analysed the Spaniard from inside the Losail International Circuit paddock, before indicating that a ‘Laguna Seca-esque’ strategy from Rossi would be needed to tame Stoner and prevent an Australian victory.

”Rossi needs to use a tactic to stop Stoner from escaping, because if he goes away from the start it will be hard to stop him. For the podium I think they will both be there, and also Lorenzo if he pushes very hard.”

Joint statement on Qatar race postponement

Sunday, 12 April 2009

FIM, IRTA, Dorna and the QMMF (Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation) have released the following statement on the MotoGP race postponement at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the MotoGP race at the Commercial bank Grand Prix of Qatar has been postponed.

Following discussions between FIM, IRTA, Dorna and the QMMF, a proposal was put to the MotoGP teams to run the race tomorrow evening. Thanks to a huge effort from all parties concerned, and out of respect to fans of motorsport around the world, it has been decided that the race will take place on Monday 13th April, 2009.

The warm-up will run at 6.30pm local time (GMT+3), with the race scheduled to start at 9pm.

FIM Road-racing Commission President, Mr. Claude Danis stated, “For safety reasons it was not possible to race in the night due to the reflection of the lights on the track. This decision had already been taken a few years ago when we first decided to run a night race in Qatar. On behalf of the FIM I am very happy that we could postpone the race until tomorrow. It is important for the championship, especially at the first race, and I would like to thank Dorna, QMMF, IRTA and the MotoGP teams for helping reach this decision together.”

Dorna Sports CEO, Mr. Carmelo Ezpeleta added, “After the arrival of a large storm we had to cancel the race as it was unsafe. The QMMF offered us the choice to run the race tomorrow, and as it was a very important decision we wanted to consult with all the team managers. The postponement was accepted by a large majority. This has been an extraordinary decision in extraordinary circumstances.”
