2010 Spanish GP presentation

An event to celebrate the launch of this year’s Gran Premio bwin.com de España – voted the Best Grand Prix of 2009 – took place in Madrid on Thursday.

Voted the best event of the 2009 season by IRTA recently, a presentation to launch the 2010 Gran Premio bwin.com de España was held in Madrid yesterday, with the Mayoress of Jerez de la Frontera, Pilar Sánchez, Dorna Sports CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, and other prominent figures such as Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’, Héctor Barberá and Julián Simón all present.

The event, which drew a crowd of over 120,000 fans for last year’s race, will be held at Jerez from April 30 to May 2 this year, and is one of the most important events in southern Spain, said Mayoress Sánchez.

“We’ve been working hard once again, and it seems clear that the management model we have put in place over the past five years has worked,” said Mayoress Sánchez. “As always, the developments have been designed for fans to be able to have fun, enjoy our attractions and feel like they are at home in Jerez.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta explained his pleasure at seeing the hard work rewarded by IRTA’s award. He said: “I’m happy by the decision made by the IRTA members, because Jerez has always been a great GP. There had been problems in the past with parking and access, but a few years ago they solved these issues and it has been fantastic. It’s a great pleasure for Jerez to be honoured with this award.”

Looking ahead to the start of the 2010 campaign, Mr Ezpeleta added: “The season starts in Qatar in April, but the first race in Europe will be at Jerez. Along with the introduction of Moto2 it will be a fantastic event at Jerez.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta: At the Malaysia tests we hope to have defined the regulations for 2012

Friday, 15 January 2010

The CEO of Dorna Sports is confident an agreement can be reached with manufacturers with regards to the technical details which will regulate MotoGP.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports S.L, has spoken at Wrooom 2010 in Madonna de Campiglio this week about the changes that will be introduced for the 2012 MotoGP season.

“During the MotoGP tests next month in Malaysia, we will hold meetings with the manufacturers to finish defining the important details for the regulation of MotoGP from 2012, as well as the tank capacity and weight of the bike. If we arrive at a consensus we could have the technical regulations before the start of the Championship.”

As reported at the time, in a meeting last December between the representatives who govern MotoGP (IRTA, Dorna and MSMA) the Grand Prix Commission agreed to change the maximum capacity of engines in the premier class to 1000cc for the 2012 season. It was also decided that there will be a limit of four cylinders and a maximum cylinder bore diameter of 81mm.

With regards to a possible earlier implementation of the rules in 2011, Ezpeleta said: “At the moment we are not contemplating bringing it forward, but if the manufacturers ask for it altogether, we can evaluate it.”

The head of the company which owns the rights to MotoGP is convinced that the new regulations will allow the ideal number of 22 riders to be reached with the entry of new manufacturers, and will not require Dorna to go in search of new constructors.

“We will not and have never tried to convince anyone to come and compete,” said Ezpeleta. “They should be interested in coming themselves. We speak with everybody from all around the world, but never send anybody to convince a manufacturer to come and compete in our Championship.”

Turning to Moto2, Ezpeleta confirmed that the entry list of teams that will shape the grid of 39 riders for the inaugural 2010 season will be announced early next month.

In the 125cc class, in which technical regulations must remain stable until 2014, Ezpeleta does not foresee any changes in the short term.

“We will see,” he said. “For the moment the category is in good shape, so if it continues in its role of introducing new riders from around the world, this is good. If that changes, we will talk to all those involved – as we always do – and seek a solution.”

Valentino Rossi rated as one of the best world athletes of the decade

Thursday, 31 December 2009

The mainstream media includes the Italian in a list alongside the likes of Usain Bolt, Roger Federer and Michael Phelps.

As is the norm at the end of the year, and also the decade, the world media has offered its view on the top athletes of the last ten years. With seven premier class World Championship titles since his entry into the category back in 2000, Rossi has secured his spot at the pinnacle of the sport and is now considered one of the best sport stars of the past decade.

Assessment methods vary; in some cases the athletes themselves vote and set the rankings, while in others it is the readers of prominent publications who decide who has the honour of being considered the best.

In Italy, Rossi tops the rankings. Over 40% of Gazzetta dello Sport readers consider the 30 year-old to be the best, well ahead of Swiss tennis star Roger Federer (13.8%) and Olympic and World 100m and 200m champion Usain Bolt (8.8%), with Michael Schumacher (7.4%) and the Italian national football team (6.3%) also featuring in the poll.

There was a similar trend in Tuttosport, with Rossi taking a sizeable 48.6% of the vote, and Bolt 12.4% and Federer 11%.

In Spain, daily El Mundo registered nearly 30,000 votes from readers with Rossi taking second place with 17% of the share, behind Federer (27.1%) and ahead of Phelps (12.2%).

El Pais asked the athletes themselves to choose the top stars of 2009, with Rossi coming second with 16 votes, behind Bolt who amassed 47. FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi came third with seven votes, while Rossi beat Spanish stars such as NBA basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies, Marc Gasol, as well as cyclists Samuel Sánchez, Carlos Sastre and Alejandro Valverde. Rossi also came ahead of Spanish motorcyclists Toni Bou and Marc Coma, and tennis players David Ferrer and Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Journalists of the prestigious French paper L’Equipe also developed a specific method for deciding their selection, in which Rossi placed third behind Bolt and Federer, but ahead of Messi and World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb.
