Aoyama and Simoncelli conclude Sepang test

Wednesday, 23 December 2009

Hiroshi Aoyama rounds off three days of testing in Malaysia having completed close to 150 laps, and with a faster lap time than fellow rookie Marco Simoncelli.

Interrupted only by a downpour of rain on Tuesday afternoon, Hiroshi Aoyama and the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team concluded their three-day test at the Sepang International Circuit on Wednesday having registered very positive results.

Timing his fastest lap at just two tenths of a second slower than the circuit record with a fastest turn of 2’02.30, and close to half a second faster than test companion Marco Simoncelli, Aoyama was delighted to have had the opportunity to enjoy more time aboard a premier class bike.

“It was very important that we had the test in Sepang at this time of the year,” said the 2009 250cc World Champion. “The circumstances were ideal; apart from the rain on Tuesday afternoon. I have to learn a lot, because the MotoGP bike is so much different from the 125cc and 250cc machines. I have to get used to the traction control and to the fact that all works electronically. I am satisfied with the work of these days, but I want to do more.”

He added: “Now I will travel back to Japan and spend some time with my family and friends, and when I come back to Barcelona in January I will spend more time analysing the data from this test in order to be prepared for the next test in February, when we come back to Sepang.”

Aoyama tested the 2009 Honda machine at this test, and for the next scheduled MotoGP test in February is set to have the 2010 prototype, Technical Director Tim Jojic confirmed.

Head of the team Daniel M. Epp said: “I am very satisfied with this entire test. It was definitely the right decision to run it. The team has been working perfectly and rider and team could get used to one another. Hiroshi was very concentrated and was riding constant lap times, one second faster each day. This is the perfect conclusion for 2009.”

Simoncelli, whose fastest time was a 2’03.20, undertook a 21-lap race simulation on the final day, and was pleased to have also been able to gain further valuable experience.

The San Carlo Honda Gresini rider said: “I’ve ridden around 900 kilometres (160 laps) over the past three days, which was a nice early Christmas present! I’m happy; I had hoped to go a little faster but the lap times were not our principal target here and I am extremely satisfied with what we have achieved. Fortunately today the rain held off and we were able to do a race simulation. I did 21 laps at a consistent pace in the 2’04” region – even over the last few laps when the tyres were almost completely spent. Before the race simulation I did a 2’03.20 but I felt like I could have gone a good bit faster if the track was in better shape.”

Elías closer to knowing Moto2 future

Monday, 14 December 2009

The Spanish rider is waiting to find out how his 2010 season will shape up, with a Moto2 deal with Gresini a possibility.

Toni Elías expects to discover more about his future next week, as he weighs up offers from Moto2 teams for the 2010 season.

Having spent five seasons in MotoGP, the 26 year-old has now decided to pursue the next chapter of his career in the new Moto2 category which debuts next year. Although his destination is still not confirmed, Elías looked ahead to the new campaign with motogp.com.

“I am very excited and eager,” Elías explained. “At the moment I have various offers that I am evaluating, and I expect to hear soon from Fausto Gresini, who is looking for a main sponsor for his Moto2 project. Next week things will be clearer, and since we’re in December I’d like to settle the issue and know which team I will be racing for in 2010.”

The prospect of a new challenge in a debuting class is one which inspires Elías. He continued: “In the Moto2 category everything will be new to me, and I will be able to develop a chassis along with the team. This was not possible in MotoGP and it motivates me a lot. I want to do well and enjoy riding the bike, but this won’t be easy given the number and quality of riders and teams who will be competing. I promise there will be a fight!”

Next up for Elías is a minor operation to remove a piece of bone from his right elbow, the result of an injury sustained in a crash at Donington this year. A short recovery period will be followed by the start of pre-season fitness training on January 2.

The MotoGP Girls Will Bring Your Jaw To The Ground

The MotoGP Girls Will Bring Your Jaw To The GroundTotal Pro Sports - The high speeds and numerous thrills experienced at any motor racing track are enough to bring in the fans, but if extra incentive was ever needed, we found it. Please allow me to introduce to you all, the MotoGP Girls.

These women you can often find strutting around the pit area in their tight shirts and short skirts, straining the necks of every man that walks by. The best part of it all is that these gorgeous women are not afraid to show off their assets, and that makes for a lovely clip that is eye candy to any man who enjoys those types of things.

It is a great sight to take in, but we must be left to wonder whether it is too great. While our lives are not in danger for taking a harmless glance (unless your wife/girlfriend is present), just think about the actual racers. With the speeds they travel at, any distraction can be a deadly one. Maybe looks really can kill.

Poncharal happy with Moto2 shakedown test

Tech3 boss delighted with initial response after first test of new Moto2 machine in France.

Hervé Poncharal was extremely satisfied with the on-track debut of the Moto2 prototype his Monster Tech3 team will race in next season’s inaugural World Championship, after a shakedown test in Ledenon earlier this week.

With French rider Florian Marino testing the bike in France, the Tech3 team had the opportunity to smooth any minor problems ahead of official rider Raffaele de Rosa’s first ride at the Valencia test next week.

“I’m very happy with this shakedown test,” Poncharal told motogp.com. “The rider has been pushing a bit and we could get his feedback, and he was really pleased. Florian says it is much closer to a Grand Prix 125cc bike than a 600cc production race bike because everything is much stiffer, the chassis is more rigid, but it’s a proper race bike and prototype.”

“We did the running in of the engine, but we couldn’t do too many laps because we had a faulty earth connection. We found out quite quickly, and we decided to do another day at a circuit nearby and that went really well. The weather was cold and dry so we could do quite a few laps without a single problem and try and work to understand how the chassis, suspension and everything else is working.”

The next step for the Tech3 team is the test at Valencia from December 9-10, where Poncharal is hoping to gain a clearer idea of the development of the bike.

“The purpose of the shakedown test was fulfilled; the bike is running perfectly well,” he continued. “Of course things will be very different at Valencia. We’ll have had one and a half days of testing when we arrive in Valencia and some of the other teams will have had a lot more track time. So for the first time we’ll compare with one another. However, not everyone will use the same engine so there could be quite a big difference in the engine department.”

“We want to compare ourselves to the other Moto2 teams and hear what Raffaele de Rosa is thinking about the bike after his first time on it. Hopefully he won’t need too much and the bike will be well prepared, but he could point out some weak points that we’ll need to modify for the next test. We almost have the second bike ready so the next test will be with both De Rosa and (Yuki) Takahashi.”

Poncharal is waiting to see what the results from Valencia show before making solid plans for further testing, adding, “There are a lot of dates that have been submitted to us at Albacete and other tracks, so the next test will be with both official riders. We just want to wait and see what happens in Valencia to decide if we need to test again very soon after that, or if we have time to prepare something with less stress and pressure for the next test. It won’t be before January 10.”

Rossi excels in Ferrari 430 in Vallelunga

Italian takes third place in the GT3 class, as he participates in the 19th edition of the 6 Hours of Vallelunga in a team with Andrea Ceccato and Alessio Salucci.

Over 10,000 spectators gathered at the Vallelunga Circuit to watch Valentino Rossi on four wheels, as the MotoGP World Champion teamed up with Andrea Ceccato and Alessio Salucci in a Ferrari 430 prepared by the Kessel Team.

Fog forced the opening laps of the endurance race to be driven behind the safety car, but it was Rossi who started behind the wheel and again took over in the sixth hour. However, there were problems for the Italian trio, as mechanical issues and an outbreak of fire in the closing stages prevented them from challenging for victory.

Rossi and his team-mates eventually finished third in the GT3 class, behind the Corvette of Emanuele Pirro, Carlo Graziani and Elio Marchetti and the Ferrari 430 of Forgione, Carugati and La Mazza.

“We had a bit of misfortune at the end, so I’d like to come back and try again,” said Rossi. “If there is an opportunity to return next year, I’d be happy to, because when you are at the front only 40 minutes from the end it leaves a bit of a bitter taste.”

“I was scared a little by the fire, but the safety guys were very quick to react. It’s tough, because we came close to victory. There wasn’t a battle at the start because of the safety car, but we’ve all had fun because we ran well and had many fans who came along.”

Pirro, who won the GT3 class, was quick to acknowledge Rossi’s efforts, and said, “Valentino is an example for everyone, because he’s a champion and has the humility to try different disciplines, without regret and giving his all.”

Lorenzo Fan Club has first gala dinner

Friday saw Jorge Lorenzo meet with his official fan club at a dinner, and the Spanish rider gave his thoughts on how his plans for 2010 are progressing.

Jorge Lorenzo

There were 150 attendees at a gala dinner hosted by Jorge Lorenzo’s official fan club on Friday, as the 2009 MotoGP World Championship runner-up enjoyed an event at which five of his ‘alter egos’ wore designs displayed by the Mallorcan rider at various stages this season.

There was also a raffle in which some of the Spaniard’s racing equipment was auctioned, including X-Lite helmets, Dainese gloves and Fiat Yamaha memorabilia.

“I have been impressed. I found it very funny that there were the five Lorenzos, especially in this spectacular venue,” said Lorenzo of the event held at Opium in Barcelona. “This was the first dinner of the official fans’ club; 2009 was the first year with the fan club and it’s very important to me that so many people have come.”

Lorenzo underwent a minor operation last week to remove a titanium plate in his left collarbone, and the 22 year-old’s recovery is going well, as are his early preparations for the new campaign.

“At the moment, the most important thing is to finish taking care of my left collarbone after my recent operation, and I’m much better now,” he said. “Then I’ll go to Indonesia and Bali to rest. Afterwards, we have to begin preparations for pre-season.”

Lorenzo continued, “The first feelings on the M1 are very positive. We are living in very competitive times and must be very happy to improve by a few tenths of a second. I’m also very happy with the work done by Yamaha, and next time it is available we’ll be able to test the new engine with more horsepower.”

Casting his thoughts further ahead, Lorenzo commented on his future beyond the end of next season.

“We’ll see what happens during the year. Never, or very rarely, has there been a situation with the top four riders out of contract at the same time. It will be very interesting to see how it develops,” he stated. “For me, Yamaha is the priority, they have put their confidence in me and I enjoy working with them a lot. Anyway, never say never.”

Bautista continues his Suzuki education

Spanish MotoGP rookie completes a further three-day test aboard the GSV-R in Portugal, alongside official Suzuki test rider Nobuatsu Aoki.

Álvaro Bautista’s graduation from 250cc to the premier class continued this week, with the Spanish rider undertaking his second test on the factory Suzuki prototype.

Having experienced his first action on the 800cc machine during the Valencia test earlier in the month, Bautista travelled to Portugal with Aoki to get some valuable track time at the Estoril circuit as the Rizla Suzuki team collected more feedback ahead of the start of the 2010 season.

Bautista completed more than 200 laps over the three days and experienced a range of weather conditions, which included rain, overcast skies and sun, all accompanied by cool temperatures. The Spaniard tested some new specification engine components on the GSV-R, as well as aerodynamic parts and Akrapovic exhaust systems.

Aoki continued with the test programme started by Loris Capirossi in Valencia, further assessing new parts ahead of the winter break.

“Suzuki is very pleased to have been able to complete this test for two reasons - firstly to give Álvaro essential additional seat-time on the GSV-R and secondly to give Nobu the chance to do some important testing on a GP track outside of Japan,” explained Suzuki team manager Paul Denning. “Nobody in Suzuki or in the team is under any illusions regarding the amount of additional performance needed out of the GSV-R for 2010 and whilst the test items have not been night-and-day differences, they will certainly help the overall package be a lot stronger when we get the new bike at Sepang in February.”

Bautista, who by the end of the test was lapping consistently around the 1’38.5 mark, pleased Denning with his display.

“Álvaro has been very impressive over the three days and has completed 212 laps with absolutely no errors,” said Denning. “His pace at the end of the test is very respectable, especially considering that there were only two bikes out there on track. With cooler conditions and no rubber being laid down the conditions were not as good as they were at the race weekend last month. He has gelled really well with the whole team and is taking a very calm approach.”

The team are now looking to the next scheduled test in Malaysia in February, as Denning added, “It is now a long time until Loris and Álvaro get to test again. We really wish Loris could have been here in Estoril, but we are grateful to have had this opportunity to point us in the right direction as Suzuki strives to become competitive in 2010.”

Antonio Banderas Moto2 team takes shape

Wednesday, 18 November 2009

Team Manager Dani Devahive outlines Promoracing plans, with an official presentation incorporating the Spanish actor due in early 2010.

Another step in the preparation for the inaugural Moto2 season in 2010 was taken this week as confirmation came that Promoracing plan to race in the new category, with backing from Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.

Team manager Dani Devahive explained to motogp.com that his Promoracing outfit – currently preparing for the final round of the CEV Buckler 2009 (Spanish National Championship) in Valencia this weekend – will race as ‘Team Jack & Jones by Antonio Banderas’ in the Moto2 category next year, with title sponsorship due to be signed this week.

A rider line-up of Joan Olivé, who finished this year’s 125cc World Championship in ninth place, and Kenny Noyes will take to the track for the team, after both had their first experiences on the Promoracing Moto2 machine during last week’s Valencia test.

“We're very happy as after 10 years of hard work in the Spanish Championship and other various international projects, we have finally reached our goal: to move up to the World Championship with our own team, two riders and a strong technical structure. The new Moto2 class is the best possible opportunity for us to showcase our potential,” Devahive told motogp.com.

“Antonio is a big fan of motorcycling and he first became involved in the project when we were looking for a sponsor. He had a look at our history and what we have achieved in the Spanish Championship and decided to commit himself to our project, becoming the team owner. Within the team he'll be a great source of inspiration and motivation for the riders and everybody, but he will also raise the media exposure of the team, which will be important for us to secure more resources and ultimately get more and more competitive.”

The unveiling of the team is due to take place in Madrid in late January or early February of 2010, and Devahive explained the long-term aim for a premier class package.

“With a very busy schedule, it won't be easy for Antonio but he'll try and come to as many races as possible. He's used to waking up at 4am to watch the races as he lives in Los Angeles!” Devahive said.

“He's very keen on this project and just like me, the ultimate goal is to race in the MotoGP class. Looking at how things are going and at the possible rule changes, it seems that within a couple of years a privateer team will be able to move up to MotoGP, with the adequate sponsorship and media profile. That's our target and that's why Antonio wanted to come into the Championship with a new team, starting from scratch and building a new outfit.”

Having recently revealed their plans to develop bikes to participate in MotoGP, Inmotec have been providing further details of their project at this weekend’s Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana.

The Inmotec MotoGP bike, which has been entirely designed and built by the Spanish company, was presented to the media at the Ricardo Tormo on Friday and could become the first Spanish machine to compete in the premier class next year.

The Pamplona based firm’s Managing Director Oscar Gorria spoke to motogp.com on Friday to give some details about how their work is developing, stating that their intention is to debut the machine in next season’s MotoGP race at the Catalunya circuit on 4th July, with their current test rider Iván Silva on board.

Explaining the origins of Inmotec, Gorria revealed, “Our project was set in motion back in 2006, as a group of friends and engineers getting together, and then things became more concrete in 2007 when we officially formed Inmotec, in Navarra (northern Spain). We started to do the numbers with regard to what was originally just a dream and we saw that it would be possible to make a MotoGP bike.”

“We started to work very hard and the result is what we have here today. We have got here via a series of production processes, developing and evolving the machine step-by-step. Now that the bike has been presented we will undertake a series of further tests over the next seven or eight months and then we will race next July at Catalunya.”

Asked for further details on testing, Gorria added, “The plan that we have is to keep practicing with Iván Silva, who rides for us in Spain and to attend MotoGP tests, sharing the track with the main factories. Then when we start racing next July we will stick with Iván Silva.”

Inmotec also plan to race at Misano, Brno, Balatonring and Valencia next year after Catalunya. “The with regard to 2011 we want to step things up, to become another factory producing race bikes, have a test team and provide material for a World Championship team who would compete with our bike. By that we mean copying the model of the factories who currently participate in MotoGP,” added Gorria.

In addition to their MotoGP plans, Inmotec also intend to have an involvement in the new Moto2 class, although at first they will focus solely on the Spanish National Championship.

“We have a Moto2 project and we hope that in March 2010 the bike will be ready and out on track. At the moment the plan is to run two bikes in the CEV Buckler (Spain’s National Championship) and develop the bikes there,” concluded Gorría.

Brivio on superb experience of working with Rossi

Tuesday, 27 October 2009

Valentino Rossi’s Team Manager at Fiat Yamaha, Davide Brivio, says the World Champion continues to surprise him with his achievements.

The novelty of repeatedly winning world titles does not seem to have faded for Valentino Rossi, and neither has Davide Brivio’s enthusiasm for working with the seven-times premier class World Champion.

Rossi’s fourth MotoGP title with Yamaha was met with high praise from those within the factory set-up, amongst them Brivio, who explained that the presence of team-mate Jorge Lorenzo had helped the Italian to increase his level of performance in 2009.

“Working with Valentino is always something special, and despite it having been six years he is always able to surprise with something new,” said Brivio. “Every year is special, but I think this year is because at the beginning of the season we realised we had big competition internally, and it wasn’t so easy because by the middle of the season the strongest rival was in the same garage. At the end of the day it was very interesting, and I think we managed it very well.”

He continued, “Big congratulations go to Valentino because we saw him working very hard this year, harder than ever I think. When the level goes up, and the competition becomes stronger, he puts in more effort. I think that’s why he’s still here celebrating championships.”

The 30 year-old’s twelfth podium of the season at Sepang on Sunday sealed the 2009 crown after a controlled ride in wet conditions, and it is Rossi’s lack of critical mistakes this year that Brivio believes has been key.

“The group (Rossi’s team) has been together for six years, and is always very careful about details and not making mistakes, because they do happen,” he said. “The target is to make as few mistakes as possible, but we really care about the details. Even the mechanics – who have been working together for 15 years – are always thinking how to make it better, and this is a motivation that comes from Valentino.”

“As he works so hard to beat his rivals, we also have to work harder to not make any mistakes and to give him the right set-up. We found out this year we had the best set-up on the track, we had two good riders, and I think we dominated the season, which is just fantastic.”

Rossi: This is a ‘great achievement’

Sunday, 25 October 2009

Valentino Rossi claimed his seventh premier class world title in Malaysia – the ninth of his career across all categories – on Sunday, and acknowledged the magnitude of his feat.

A twelfth podium of the season for Valentino Rossi – the 163rd of his career across all classes – secured the 2009 MotoGP World Championship for the Italian at Sepang, and he was understandably delighted with the achievement.

In rain-soaked conditions and after falling to tenth place from pole position after a slow start, Rossi climbed the field to secure third behind Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa, and explained the problems that faced him before the start of the race.

“Today’s race went a bit like how the season has gone, because we were so fast on the dry tyres, but right before the start of the race it started to rain so we had to go out on the track without any wet setting,” said Rossi.

“It’s a great achievement, and for me it’s the ninth championship, the seventh in MotoGP. I have to thank all the guys from Yamaha, who are great, and all the Fiat Yamaha team, from Jeremy (Burgess, chief mechanic) and all the mechanics to all the guys that work for me, and all my friends. All the people that helped me with this great achievement.”

Having been pushed throughout the season to retain his crown by team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who finished fourth, Rossi paid special tribute to the 22 year-old Spaniard’s efforts.

“Throughout the season I had great rivals, at the end especially Jorge my team-mate, who stayed very close to me, and we had some great fights. He’s a great rival so congratulations to him,” said Rossi.

“But we are on the top and now we’ll relax and try to take in this achievement. The ninth championship is great – I’m so happy.”
